In this assignment, you will investigate ancient manuscripts and books that give you insight into the history of graphic communication and how the principles of design were used in these early manuscripts. You will write a 50-100 word reflection and post to your wiki site that addresses the following: Title of Manuscript/Book: Bible for Ethiopia
Describe your first impression of these ancient works in respect to design My first impression of the Bible for Ethiopia as it relates to design was impressive. The craftsmanship of the book tells me the author took great pride in his work. The front cover of the book reminds me of a door. The different styles of borders inside of another border made the cover look three dimensional.
Identify examples of each of the four principles of design In this section, I will share the four principles of design (contrast, repetition, alignment, proximity) I found while analyzing this book. Contrast Contrast of shapes and colors tends to carry on onto the next page of the manuscript. Contrast in colors is present. Pictures are at various angles on selected pages. Repetition The designs of the illustrations are repeated throughout the manuscript. Alignment Pictures/graphics on the pages are aligned with one another. The text is uniform on pages 9 – 11 and again later on. Proximity Illustrations of the pictures are group together especially on page 25 of the manuscript. Graphics do complement each other.
What techniques did the authors/artists employ to help us understand the importance of those manuscripts/books? The techniques I felt the author/artist employ to help us understand the importance of this manuscript was contrast and repetition. In my opinion, the color choices were used to make a point. The story line is easy to follow due to the repetition of the design. The design carried over onto the next page was a technique I thought the author used to stress its importance.
